Montreal's Plateau-Mont-Royal borough is about to become even more pedestrian friendly. Its borough council has committed to six changes to its road network aimed at making surrounding neighbourhoods safer for cyclists and people travelling by foot. Among the changes to select street sections are direction reversals, pedestrianizations and the institution of one-way traffic.

19-year-old Megan Petitclerc was arrested after she allegedly entered a Montreal North Shore elementary school with a knife on October 24, Terrebonne police said in a Thursday evening news release. Police assert that Petitclerc "had a fixation on a school employee and wanted to attack her."

According to information shared with the media, a 10:03 a.m. 911 call first alerted authorities to the presence of an individual with a knife inside Terrebonne's école primaire Jean-De La Fontaine.

In the latest chapter in the conflict between Boomers and Gen Z, the Quebec government is introducing a bill that it says will "recognize and promote academic liberty" in universities. According to Higher Education Minister Danielle McCann, the bill would ban universities from requiring professors to give trigger warnings for "shocking" course content, among other measures.

Classrooms, McCann said, summarizing a report from a commission on academic freedom, "should not be considered safe spaces."

A 16-year-old died on Thursday, February 10, after sustaining what Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils described as an injury by a sharp object in Pointe-Claire on Tuesday afternoon.

The SPVM major crimes unit has taken over the investigation. Chèvrefils said the teen died as a result of his injuries but an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Some McGill University student groups are fighting the university's reopening plan.

The school's decision to return to in-person learning led the Social Work Student Association (SWSA), McGill Law Students' Association (LSA), and Education Graduate Students' Society (EGSS) to declare strikes. Faculty of Arts students are also considering a motion to support these strikes and oppose the reopening plan.

Dawson College's long-awaited expansion project has been shelved. In a statement, college Director General Diane Gauvin said Minister of Higher Education Danielle McCann delivered the news on January 28 along with an explanation that funding for the expansion of colleges will prioritize francophone schools.

"[She] informed the college that its infrastructure project would not go forward," Gauvin said. "The government has chosen to prioritize, in her words, 'francophone' students. She urged Dawson to explore other options, such as leasing."

The government of Quebec announced a new initiative to meet current and future labour needs in the childhood education services network. The plan, titled "opération main-d'œuvre," aims to recruit thousands of educators, in part through a student scholarship program offering up to $9,000.

The Minister of Families, Mathieu Lacombe, and the Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity, Jean Boulet, revealed the new measures as part of a $300 million government investment to enlist more people in the profession.

Quebec reported 2,386 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. It's the first time the province tallied over 2,300 new cases in a single day since January 8.

"We're specifically looking at Montreal," Dubé told Paul Arcand of 98.5 Wednesday, adding that he spoke to Regional Public Health Director Dr. Mylène Drouin earlier in the morning.
