New Year's Day falls on Monday, January 1, 2024, and many businesses and establishments across the city of Montreal are likely to be closed. However, some services will be up and running.

What's Open in Montreal on New Year's Day

  • 311 will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Collections of household waste, bulky items, recyclable materials and food waste will take place across the city
  • Parking restrictions remain in effect on holidays.
  • Espace pour la Vie destinations including the Biodome, the Biosphère, the Botanical Garden, the Insectarium and the Planetarium are open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Montreal Casino will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 a.m.
  • Cinemas
  • The STM will run on a holiday schedule
  • Some Montreal restaurants, dépanneurs and convenience stores (hours may differ)

What's Closed in Montreal on New Year's Day

  • Canada Post
  • Public markets including Jean-Talon Market, Maissonueve Market and Atwater Market are closed on January 1 and 2, 2024
  • SAQ stores will be closed on January 1 and will re-open on January 2, 2024, at 1 p.m.
  • SQDC stores will be closed on January 1 and will re-open on January 2, 2024, under normal operating hour

  • Écocentres will be closed from December 24 to January 1st inclusively
