Police Responded To An Illegal Gathering Of Nearly 200 People In Montreal's Mile End

Officers arrived on the scene following a noise complaint.

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) says it stopped an illegal gathering in the Mile End on the evening of December 7.

Up to 200 people are reported to have participated in the gathering, which took place in a Jewish community centre on Avenue du Parc, to celebrate a wedding.

Police reportedly responded to a 911 call that informed them of the gathering as well as some noise at approximately 7 p.m.

According to Raphaël Bergeron, SPVM public relations officer, most of the people at the event "had already dispersed" when police arrived on the scene.

Therefore, the police could not observe the full scope of the incident. But the information police received led authorities to believe there were around 200 people at the party.

A report was prepared and an investigation was initiated. At present, no ticket has been issued, though this could change in the future.

Authorities reminded the organizers of the event that this type of gathering is illegal, and alerted them to the public health rules that are currently in place for this period of the pandemic.
