Montreal is under a severe thunderstorm watch — and there's a tornado warning nearby, too

Montreal and surrounding areas are bracing for severe weather, with Environment Canada issuing a severe thunderstorm watch for greater Montreal and Laval. Conditions are ripe for the development of dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy downpours on Monday afternoon and evening.

Environment Canada warns that severe thunderstorms can sometimes produce tornadoes. Large hail poses a risk to property and can cause injuries. Very strong wind gusts have the potential to damage buildings, down trees, and blow large vehicles off the road.

Heavy downpours could also lead to flash floods and water pooling on roads, making driving hazardous. Water-related activities are also risky due to sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

"Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!" advises the agency.

In addition to the severe thunderstorm watch, a tornado warning has also been issued for Lachute, Papineauville, and Tremblant. Damaging winds, large hail, and locally intense rainfall are also possible. Residents in these areas are urged to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

"One or more weak tornadoes may be occurring in the area. They sometimes appear as funnel clouds with swirling debris near the ground," the warning states.

Environment Canada advises going indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows. Basements, bathrooms, stairwells, or interior closets are recommended. Mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers, and other temporary shelters should be abandoned for strong buildings. As a last resort, lying in a low spot and protecting the head from flying debris is suggested.
