This Montreal Winter Festival Is Making Snow Sports More Accessible
There's a different activity every weekend in February.

Montreal is no stranger to cold season celebrations, but this February, one winter festival is carving a special path for Black History Month. BLK WinterFest is a month-long extravaganza that's as much about breaking barriers as it is about breaking tracks in the snow.
Throughout February, the festival prioritizes the Black community in a field where they've been long underrepresented: winter sports. From skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and ice climbing, the festival hosts activities that cater to all ages and skill levels. And for those who fancy something a bit different, there's even a skating maze framed by Quebec's snowy outdoors.
BLK WinterFest addresses logistical concerns, with transportation options available for most activities. Once at a venue, participants are free to explore solo or join guided groups, with the option to rent all necessary equipment on site.
The festival extends priority registration to BIPOC participants, though allies are also welcome. "More than 80% of our participants come to our events alone. You’ll make tons of friends and connections," according to organizers.
That sentiment is at the core of Hike MTL, the group behind the festival, which aims to empower BIPOC communities through outdoor nature-based excursions. Their mission to reduce economic and social barriers aligns with the festival's ethos.
"Gatekeeping is real. Winter sports are beyond expensive and inaccessible. That's why we do what we do. Accessibility is key," writes Hike MTL.
This year, the festival lineup includes:
- Intro to Cross Country Ski (Beginner and Intermediate Trails): February 3
- Snowshoeing (Beginner and Intermediate Trails): February 4
- Ice Climbing: February 10 at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., February 11 at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
- Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding: February 17 and 18
- Skating in the Forest: February 24
Pricing for each activity varies, but BLK WinterFest offers affordable rates, including transportation, entrance fees, professional guides, rental equipment, and even hand & foot warmers.
If you've always wanted to try snowboarding in a supporting setting, now's your chance. BLK Winterfest is setting fresh tracks for a more inclusive future in winter sports and beyond.
