After teasing the announcement on Sunday, the government announced Monday that Montreal is officially going into red alert as of midnight between Wednesday and Thursday (12:00 a.m. Thursday).

The entire metro area (CMM) is included. The regions of Chaudière-Appalaches and the Capitale-Nationale, with the exception of Portneuf and Charlevoix, will also become red zones.

The news comes after a significant increase in new cases across the province. Quebec reported 750 new cases on Monday and 896 on Sunday.

This is a critical situation and we have to act right now in the interest of all Quebecers.

Premier François Legault outlined what red alert will entail.

No one, unless for an exceptional reason, such as care for a senior, will be allowed in each other's houses. In these exceptional cases, only one person will be allowed in a home.

For 28 days, restaurants, bars, and casinos will be closed to the public. Businesses can still offer delivery and takeout service. 

All outdoor assemblies where a two-metre distance isn't possible will be banned.

At all protests, wearing a mask will be mandatory.

In red zones, all businesses such as hairdressers and hotels will remain open.

There are no plans to close schools.
