COVID-19 case counts have been on an encouraging decline in Quebec over the last few weeks. The daily results for June 5 for Montreal and Laval were only 57 and 13 new cases of COVID-19 respectively, which is the lowest we've seen in months.

Throughout la belle province, there have been no new deaths related to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours and the number of new cases has dropped below 200, with 179 confirmed cases.

On Monday, May 31, Quebec recorded its lowest number of new COVID-19 cases since September 2020. The news comes as the province pushes ahead with its gradual reopening plan.

The government reported 276 new cases on May 31. According to data from the Institut national de santé publique (INSPQ), the province previously hadn't seen fewer than 300 new cases since September 14, 2020.

Quebec is putting Quebec City, Lévis and Gatineau "on pause" until April 12, meaning it will close the cities' schools, as well as recently reopened non-essential businesses, such as cinemas and gyms.   

Curfew in these three cities will revert back to 8 p.m. for the duration of the pause, Premier François Legault announced in a press conference on March 31. He explained the government "has a lot of concerns" about these areas because the COVID-19 situation is "deteriorating," as cases increase.

Updated data from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) shows that Montreal is currently managing 197 confirmed cases of COVID-19 virus variants, first identified in Brazil, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

As of March 12, public health officials had recorded Montreal's first confirmed case of the B.1.351 variant strain, which was identified in South Africa.

UPDATE: In a press conference the following day, on February 11, Quebec Public Health Director Dr. Horacio Arruda said there were 48 confirmed or suspected COVID-19 variant strain cases in the Montreal region.
