Jagmeet Singh's NDP wants to extend the temporarily doubled Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit, according to statements Singh made in an interview with the Canadian Press. The GST credit typically grants additional money to low-income Canadian residents, offsetting the financial pressure of paying federal taxes.

It was doubled in 2022 over six months, meaning eligible Canadians received twice as much from the government during one of the two pay periods between which the GST payment is split.

The feds' plan to double the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit for half a year has been approved. The goal of the limited-time bonus is to diminish the impact of inflation and make life more affordable for many Canadians. Officials estimate that about 11 million eligible taxpayers will be able to get more money back from the government as a result.

The measure, part of Bill C-30, the Cost of Living Relief Act (Targeted Tax Relief), received Royal Assent on October 18.

As part of an effort to alleviate the impact of inflation, the Government of Canada has tabled legislation to double the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit for eligible households.

The GST (TPS in French) credit is meant to "offset the financial impact" of the tax on "low and modest-income people and families," the Department of Finance explains online. In effect, those households get back some of the money they lose through the sales tax.
