King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla sent a message to Canada in the aftermath of Fiona, a storm that ripped across the Atlantic provinces and eastern Quebec, causing flooding and damage to homes along the coast.

The September 28 letter from the monarch is addressed to Governor General Mary Simon and, like all royal messages to Canada, includes a French translation.

Hurricane Fiona has been wreaking havoc since its emergence last week. After hitting Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the tropical storm set its sights on Eastern Canada. Environment Canada issued a warning for parts of eastern Quebec and the Atlantic provinces as strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surges were predicted.

After turning into a category four hurricane, Fiona eventually hit Canada, causing major widespread damage in numerous regions across the east from Cape Breton, Charlottetown, and Port-aux-Basques all the way to Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine, to name a few. Most of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick lost power as Hurricane Fiona made landfall.

Hurricane Fiona is expected to hit eastern Quebec and Atlantic Canada with heavy rainfall and powerful hurricane-force winds this weekend.

Environment Canada warns that the Category 4 storm is on track to land in Nova Scotia on Saturday. Parts of the province and the Gulf of St. Lawrence could see raging winds up to 200 km/h and around 20 centimetres of rainfall.
