The Montreal metro is breaking its curfew this weekend for Nuit Blanche, courtesy of the Société de transport de Montréal. No need to race against the clock or worry about missing the last train — the metro will be running all night long so you can explore your pick of 100+ activities taking place across the city from dusk to dawn. Paratransit and bus services will also extend into the early hours of the morning.

From the evening of March 2 to the morning of March 3, trains will provide round-the-clock service for passengers. The STM is adding a touch of mystery to the night with a "mystery metro car." Decked out for Nuit Blanche, the special carriage promises onboard surprises and entertainment for unsuspecting passengers.

Montreal's STM is at it again, and this time they're playing Cupid with the metro map. The Société de transport de Montréal has slapped a fresh coat of love-themed puns on station signs, just in time for Valentine's Day. Whether you're a cynic or a sap, you can't help but crack a smile — or roll your eyes.

Jolicoeur, already the flirt of the network, didn't need much of a makeover to fit the lovey-dovey theme. Lionel-Groulx, with its usual gravitas, has been rebranded as Lionel-Chou because who wouldn't want their daily commute seasoned with a term of endearment that also means cabbage?

The Societe de Transport de Montreal (STM) has an online boutique with loads of Montreal Metro-themed items including clothings, home decor, office supplies and random knick knacks that brilliantly encompass the Montreal transit system.

The STM shop also offers a few items that will take you way back to the old school STM days, including the retro bus tickets available in cushions, pencil cases and more, as well as a classic collectible bus from 1989. Talk about nostalgia!

That sinking feeling of missing a bus and enduring a seemingly endless wait is all too familiar. But Montreal's STM is looking to remedy that frustration with more frequent bus lines.

New routes will operate with a predictability more associated with the metro than buses. The wait between buses on frequent lines will last between two and 12 minutes. For the average commuter, that means a shift away from strict travel plans and toward a more flexible approach.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) recently posted a video to its TikTok page of random items that are collected in the Montreal Metro lost and found — ranging from shoes to rat food.

The TikTok, titled "Normal things we find in the lost and found," featured a handful of eyebrow-raising items that really make you wonder what some transit users are up to. The list of lost and found items from the Montreal Metro includes baby shoes, a door handle, a bouncy ball, cracked iPhones, mini plush dolls, kids' baseball caps and, of course, you cannot forget the rat food — adult rat food to be specific. Actually, someone did forget the rat food.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has never shied away from a comical online moment, whether it be Metro stations getting Star Wars-themed names for May The 4th, or new holiday-themed station names during the winter season that are as clever as they are quirky, and this time around is no different.

The STM matched Montreal Metro stations with a number of zodiac signs and we're not going to lie… some are pretty accurate. In a two-part series titled "Your Metro station according to your zodiac sign" posted to the STM TikTok page, the transit agency hilariously paired six different zodiac signs with specific Montreal Metro stations — defending their stance with a quick (and witty) reason why and to be fair, the math was mathing.

After years of anticipation, the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) light rail system is officially days away from launching its trains connecting Montreal's downtown core with the South Shore. The first section of the (eventual) 67-kilometre automated network will open to the public as of July 31, 2023. However, a lucky bunch will be able to ride the train for the first time ever days before anyone else can.

The REM is currently running a contest offering the public a chance to be among the first 100 people to board and ride the train on its inaugural day. "This contest is a unique opportunity for you to get a front-row seat for the commissioning of the REM, the biggest mass transit project in Quebec in the last fifty years," REM wrote on its website.

The Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) has closed part of the green line after a water leak on April 24 revealed tunnel cracks between the Berri-UQAM and Saint-Laurent stations. The major service interruption will continue for an "indefinite period," extending as far as Lionel-Groulx and Frontenac stations.

The transit service says the closure is a preventative measure while engineering teams investigate the severity of the situation. The city has also closed de Maisonneuve Boulevard between Berri and Saint-Laurent metro stations "until further notice," while the underground inspection is underway.

Montreal's metro not only allows regular dogs to ride the rails but their robot counterparts as well — or at least they're allowed to inspect local stations.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) partnered with local software company Osedea and robotics manufacturer Boston Dynamics to have a robot dog perform "automated and autonomous" inspections of station platforms as part of a pilot project.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is strapped for cash and planning to cut back on services as a result. The transit agency released its 2023 budget at the end of November showing a $77.7M deficit and citing inflation and pandemic recovery as major shortfall drivers.

Some expenses were pushed to 2022 to cover emergency measures during the onset of COVID-19, around the time that pricey but necessary maintenance projects began on AZUR trains.

As of July 1, 2022, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has changed its fare system, increasing the cost of tickets by 2%.

The news regarding the increase in fares was announced back in April and is being implemented as part of the exo network, which includes the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), the Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL), the Société de transport de Laval (STL) and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

As of June 18, 2022, masks are no longer mandatory for public transit users across Quebec.

While the mask mandate for indoor enclosed spaces ended back on May 14, the government extended the mandate for a handful of public areas, including public transit.
