As of mid-June, Canadians can expect several payments from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), including the Canada Child Benefit (CCB).
Considering the cost of living has gone up exponentially, it's no surprise Canadians, particularly low-income families, are looking for ways to combat inflation, whether it be working extra hours, saving wherever they can, or collecting additional aid from the government.
It's important to verify your eligibility for any and all government benefits and credits as you could be entitled to anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Here's everything you need to know about the Canada Child Benefit and how much you can receive on the upcoming June payment.
What is the Canada Child Benefit?
According to the CRA, the Canada child benefit is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help with the cost of raising children under 18 years of age.
The CCB may include the child disability benefit and any related provincial and territorial programs. Canadians should apply for the CCB as soon as any of the following situations occur:
- your child is born
- a child starts to live with you, or returns to live with you after a temporary period with someone else
- you begin, end, or change a shared custody arrangement
- you get custody of a child
Who is eligible for the Canada Child Benefit?
To qualify for the Canada Child Benefit, you must meet several criteria including:
- living with a child under 18 and being primarily responsible for their care;
- being a resident of Canada for tax purposes with Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, protected status, or other specified qualifications;
- and not receiving CCB for a foster child when Children's Special Allowances (CSA) are payable.
- you're an individual who is registered, or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act
Furthermore, you may be eligible if you care for a child under a kinship or close relationship program, provided CSA isn't payable for that child.
How much can you receive from the Canada Child Benefit?
Per the CRA, if your adjusted family net income is under $34,863, you get the maximum amount for each child.
In this case, you can receive $619.17 per month (or $7,437 annually) for each child under six years old, and $522.91 ($6,275 annually) for children six to 17 years of age.
