Montreal Is Getting Its Own Black Lives Matter Street Mural On Ste-Catherine

Similar murals have popped up all over the U.S.
Staff Writer

Artists and community organizers are working on a Black Lives Matter street mural in Montreal. The giant painting, which reads "La vie des noir.e.s compte" (Black Lives Matter in French) is going up in downtown Montreal on rue Sainte-Catherine.

The mural is being painted along the pedestrian corridor in the Village.

The mural is taking shape thanks to the efforts of Gala Dynastie and Never Was Average, two community groups that advocate for and celebrate BIPOC voices in Montreal.

@MTL_Ville is proud to support this initiative from @GalaDynastie and the artist collective Never Was Average to reaffirm loud and clear that Black lives matter.

Mayor Valérie Plante

In May, the Mayor spoke out against the murder of George Floyd, saying, "let us firmly and unequivocally denounce violence, racism and systemic discrimination."

The Mayor has acknowledged the existence of systemic racism in Montreal.

Premier François Legault, meanwhile, has denied that systemic racism exists in Quebec.
