The Samuel De Champlain Bridge will light up white tonight as a tribute to victims of COVID-19 — as well as a symbol of "strength," "solidarity" and "gratitude."

March 11 has been designated the National Day of Observance for COVID-19 across Canada, about one year after the pandemic began impacting our lives.

"Tonight, the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge will shine in white to honor the memory of those who died from COVID-19 and to support all those who have also been affected by the pandemic," said Catherine McKenna, minister of infrastructure and communities in a statement. 

In addition to the bridge, which will be illuminated from sunset to 1 a.m., government buildings will fly flags at half-mast on March 11.

A ceremony will take place in front of Quebec's National Assembly from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. At 1 p.m., "the entire population of Quebec will be invited to observe a minute of silence," according to the Government of Quebec's website.
