Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that Quebec's neighbouring province will be setting up interprovincial checkpoints to limit non-essential travel between Ontario and Quebec.

The travel checkpoints will be set up on Monday, April 19, at all of Ontario's provincial borders. The province borders both Quebec and Manitoba.

However, Ford said there will be exceptions, such as crossing the provincial border for work, medical care or transporting goods.

"We're currently facing the devastating consequences of COVID variants that entered Canada through our borders at the start of this year," said Ford.

He said Ontario is implementing the new border measures to "get ahead of the variants that are plaguing western Canada."
