Not your abuela's brunch… but she'd probably love it too.

Montreal brunch just got a little sweeter and spicier with the arrival of Piel Canela, housed in Caifan taco bar. They're serving a massive Latin American-inspired brunch menu filled with options you won't find elsewhere, like Tlatoyo de Canard, a Mexican corn patty dish, and Pancakes del Amanecer layerd with lucuma-infused dulce de leche. They've also got a variety of colourful cocktails and bottomless mimosas to complement your meal.

Piel Canela means "Cinnamon Skin," which hints at what they're all about: warm vibes and some serious flavour. The decor is festive, featuring a pink, graffitied bar, and caged hanging lights, creating an atmosphere that's as lively as the menu.

You've got your pick of breakfast mixed drinks like Mimosa Festejo with ginger liquor and passion fruit, among others, all priced at $11 per glass. For those looking to really kick back, there's a bottomless mimosa option for $30 per person.

The signature cocktail menu doesn’t disappoint either, with options like the tropical Selva Sour ($15) made with Pisco, maracuya, mango and banana, and the spiced Mango Burro ($14) with vodka, lime, rhubarb, mango, poblano chili, and ginger beer.

When it comes to food, everything kicks off with pastries from Carlota Bakery, served with café de la olla. That's coffee brewed with cinnamon and piloncillo, a kind of raw sugar. You're looking at $5 for most pastry options, which include Conchas (shell-shaped Mexican sweet buns) and Puerquitos de Piloncillo (maple-flavoured, pig-shaped cookies).

The main menu has a lot going on. You can opt for a sweet brunch with the Granola “Buen Día” ($18) made with chai-spiced homemade grains, combined with caramelized apple sauce, a blend of yogurt and cottage cheese, homemade jam, seasonal fruits, and pumpkin seeds for crunch.

The Pancakes del Amanecer ($19) are soft, scented with orange blossom, and topped with caramelized apple butter, lucuma dulce de leche, homemade meringue, seasonal fruits, and caramelized cancha, making for a rich and multi-textured dish.

For a luxurious take on French toast, the Pain Doré des Tropiques ($22) features brioche bread with maracuya cream, pineapple-cinnamon and rum compote, seasonal fruits, and coconut chips garnished with edible flowers

Savoury plates are equally compelling. The Sandwich Condorito ($29) combines mole brioche with duck drumstick confit, mushrooms, chancaca syrup, arugula, jalapeño vinaigrette, crispy potato, served with fries and truffle mayonnaise.

If you're open to seafood for brunch, the Salade Costeña de Pieuvre ($27) mixes octopus with Mexican red and green marinades, pineapple, jicama, lime and habaneros for a refreshing and spicy salad. There's also the La Patate Bénie ($23), a fancy take on hash browns with pork belly and spices, among many other dishes.

This place is all about bringing a taste of Latin America to Montreal's brunch scene, proving that the best weekends start with a bit of spice, sweetness, and everything in between.
