With the Year of the Dragon about to roar in, Montreal's Chinatown is preparing to host a spectacle filled with tradition, community, and, yes, dragons and lions dancing through the streets.

From February 9 to 11, the neighbourhood will become an interactive gallery of art installations, food, and performances, around Sun Yat-Sen Park and the local Cultural Centre.

Unlike the fixed New Year's Day of the Gregorian calendar, the Lunar New Year changes based on the phases of the moon. Rooted in Asian cultures, it marks the start of a new lunar cycle and transition to a new zodiac sign, with 2024 being the Year of the Dragon — a symbol associated with luck, power, and strength.

A grand Lunar New Year Parade, happening on February 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature dances moving rhythmically through the streets to the sound of drums and cymbals. Spectators can also expect a colourful procession of performers in elaborate costumes and community groups joining in the celebration.

In addition to the parade, the Lunar New Year party includes:

  • Live Performances: A series of cultural events taking place throughout the weekend, with traditional music, dance, and art demonstrations.
  • Art Installations: Sun Yat-Sen Park will have a wishing tree and more, according to organizers. There will also be plenty of Chinese lanterns lighting up the area.
  • Good eats: Restaurants in Chinatown will serve special menus, focussing on dishes that carry symbolic meanings for the holiday.

So, if you're looking for a joyful Friday night celebration to kickstart your weekend, followed by two full days' worth of party, Chinatown has you covered. Happy New Year!
