Montreal Restaurants & Bars Won't Reopen Any Time Soon, According To Public Health

Dr. Douin said they're "not the same level of risk" as gyms or theatres.

Based on what public health director, Dr. Mylène Drouin, said in a March 17 press conference, Montreal restaurants and bars will not be reopening for indoor dining any time soon.

The provincial government announced that gyms and live show venues would reopen in Montreal as of March 26, but Drouin said restaurants and bars are not in the same category.

"Restaurants and bars are not the same level of risk," Drouin said. "Even in orange zone regions, bars are not open."

Drouin ruled out the possibility altogether, based on the current COVID-19 situation in the Greater Montreal area.

"For us, it's clear that Montreal's situation, at the stage we're in, does not permit the reopening of restaurants," she said.
