The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has finished building its new biomanufacturing facility in Montreal. This is Canada's first lab that will be capable of manufacturing made-in-Canada COVID-19 vaccines.

However, the centre needs to go through several steps and approvals before actual vaccine production can begin.

Once it's fully licensed and operational, the facility could produce approximately 2 million doses of a vaccine per month, depending on the type of vaccine. 

In February 2021, the federal government signed an agreement with Novavax to produce its vaccine in Montreal at the new lab after Health Canada approvals.

The new lab, located on Avenue Royalmount adjacent to the NRC's existing Royalmount site, was completed in just 10 months and funded by the federal government, which invested $126 million for its design and construction.
