Quebec Has Announced Its Plan For Schools' Winter Break

Premier François Legault announced today that winter break will not be extended for Quebec elementary school students — however, secondary school students should expect to learn online until January 11.

Earlier this week, Legault said his government was considering extending the Quebec winter break to make "a kind of quarantine" for students after the holidays.

With today's announcement, that applies mainly to high schoolers. Although in-person classes for all students will end earlier than planned, replaced with distance education.

December 17 Schools close for the winter holidays

"We'll also close the schools on December 17 but students will continue to receive their education online. That's only two to four days of online teaching for primary schools," said Legault.

In primary schools, the calendar will start back on January 5, 6 or 7 depending on the region "as it was planned since a long time [ago]."

In secondary schools, where classes would normally resume around January 4, online teaching will continue until January 11.

Special schools will stay open. Daycares will stay open but only for essential services workers, Legault said.
