On August 28, the government announced that it would gradually begin to allow students in Quebec schools to participate in sports.

Premier François Legault said at the time officials would only proceed with the plan "if all goes well."

On Friday, Education Ministers Jean-François Roberge and Isabelle Charest confirmed the details and will officially allow students to participate in sports, including inter-school sports, art activities, and other extracurricular activities as of September 14.

We all have a role to play to ensure that we maintain a maximum offer of services for our youth.

The extent to which students can participate in these programs will depend on their region's level of alert, according to Quebec's new colour-coded COVID-19 alert system.

According to a statement, "students in schools located in regions considered green or yellow will be able to attend up to two stable groups other than their main class group for specific educational projects and extracurricular activities."

"I'm happy that the return to sports and leisure activities in the school environment will allow young people to reconnect with their passions," Charest said.

"They have collaborated in an extraordinary way since the beginning of this pandemic and I am convinced that, thanks to their positive attitude, the resumption of activities will take place in a safe manner."
