Fines For Refusing To Wear A Mask In Quebec Will Start At $400

The Deputy Premier confirmed they could also be much higher.

Ever since Premier François Legault announced the government would soon start fining 'irresponsible people' for refusing to wear masks, Quebecers have been wondering how much this new rule could cost them.

Thanks to a tweet by Deputy Premier Geneviève Guilbault, we now have an answer: $400 to $6,000.

$400 - $6,000 The fine for refusing to wear a mask when mandatory

"The vast majority of Quebecers respect health rules and I thank them for that," wrote Guilbault in French.

She confirmed police will be able to enforce these fines beginning Saturday, September 12 — so don't forget your mask when taking public transit or entering indoor public spaces.

The fines will apply in all of Quebec, but Legault explained that officials will focus the crackdown on regions under a "yellow alert," according to the province's new COVID-19 alert system.
