A new ranking listing the most powerful passports in the world dropped and Canada's score is a major letdown.

Nomad Capitalist, an online service that allows nomads across the globe to manage their finances, citizenship and overseas investments, compiled the best passports ranking based on five criteria: visa-free travel, taxation laws, global perception, dual citizenship and personal freedom.

Each country's passport is then given a score based on its strengths and weaknesses regarding the above criteria.

So, how did the Canadian passport measure up?

Nomad Capitalist ranked Switzerland as the number one passport in the world with an overall score of 109. While Canada has managed to appear in the top 10 in past rankings from the Passport Index and Henley Passport Index, it appears as if we didn't score too well this time around.

Canada ranked 36th with a total score of 102 — tying with Slovenia. The Canadian passport managed to rank the highest in several categories including dual citizenship visa-free travel access, while underperforming in taxation and personal freedom.

While this may seem as if the Canadian passport was ranked 36th overall, it's actually among the top 14, considering a handful of passports tied with one another.

Despite not appearing in the top 10 in 2024, Canada's Nomad Capitalist passport score has actually improved when compared to last year's rank. In 2023, the Canadian passport ranked 38th overall with a score of 101, meaning we've inched up two spots and improved our overall score by one point. A win is a win, right?
