This weekend's July-like temperatures can't erase the fact that fall is on its way. The air is growing increasingly crisp, Halloween costumes are popping up at stores across the city, and soon, the treetops will transform into a vibrant concoction of red, orange and gold hues.

While Montreal is home to plenty of gorgeous leaf-peeping spots, it's hard to beat a cozy small town when it comes to fully experiencing those magical autumn vibes. Plus, a new season is as good a reason as any to escape the city in favour of a getaway.

Luckily, you don't have to travel far for an incredible trip packed with fall fun. There are several cute small towns to check out near Montreal, including this lakeside destination — around two and a half hours away by car — which makes for an idyllic fall road trip or day trip.

Saranac Lake, a charming village nestled amidst the Adirondack Mountains, is a fall lover's paradise with "crisp air, stunning foliage, and all things cozy," according to an Instagram post from the town's account.

"Whether you're dreaming of pumpkin spice everything, cozy sweaters, or scenic hikes through vibrant forests, it's never too early to get excited," the post says.

In addition to checking out the amazing foliage, you can wander along the picturesque main street, discovering art galleries, quaint shops and cozy cafés like Origin Coffee Co.

Then, grab a bite at a local restaurant, many of which serve "farm-to-fork fall delights," the website says. The Saranac Lake Farmer’s Market also "offers the freshest local produce, perfect for crafting your own autumn-inspired meals."

For adventure-seekers and lovers of the great outdoors, Saranac Lake is a dream destination with hiking for all levels, mountain biking, camping and more. The Adirondack Rail Trail offers a perfect leisurely walk or bike ride amidst the stunning foliage.

Alternatively, Baker Mountain provides spectacular views of Saranac Lake, Lake Flower and more than 20 major mountains.

Whether you stay at an adorable inn close to the downtown core, rent a chalet in the mountains or camp by the lake, where you can enjoy beautiful reflections of the trees in the water, Saranac allows visitors to appreciate the beauty of the season from every angle.

Although the driving distance to Saranac Lake is comparable to somewhere like Ottawa, note that it is across the U.S. border so don't forget your passport!
