Thousands of Bell Canada customers across the country experienced widespread internet outages today, May 21, 2025, with major disruptions reported from coast to coast.

According to Downdetector, a popular user report database, the majority of issues are related to landline internet, total blackouts, and mobile data services. Over 130,000 Bell customers reported outages in the last 24 hours.

Air Canada and Bell will soon provide free messaging services for Aeroplan members through in-flight Wi-Fi. Bell is also becoming Air Canada's in-flight Wi-Fi sponsor, the companies announced Wednesday.

Free messaging through Wi-Fi means Aeroplan members will be able to use iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger, Viber, and Messages by Google mid-air, according to Air Canada.

Retail stores and telecom companies were unsurprisingly among those that were subject to the most consumer complaints in Quebec in the past year. But they still only represent a small fraction of the complaints sent to the province's consumer watchdog, the Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC).

According to information the OPC shared with MTL Blog, the office received a total of 21,442 complaints between December 1, 2020, and November 30, 2021.

Despite denying allegations that it misled consumers, Bell Canada has agreed to pay $2 million — a credit of $8 per eligible customer — following a class-action lawsuit launched in Quebec in March 2017.

According to the settlement agreement posted to law firm LPC Avocat Inc.'s website, the plaintiff, Shay Abicidan, claimed the telecom giant misled consumers into believing they had access to a fully fibre-optic network.
