Winter in Canada is just around the corner, and a new winter sneak-peek forecast suggests Canada might finally see a return to colder, snowier weather. That's right: After last year's historically mild winter, it looks like winter is ready to make a comeback.

With the possibility of early snow in some parts of the country, the latest winter 2024-25 preview from The Weather Network offers a glimpse of what Canadians can expect as the holidays approach.

If you don't want to miss what could be a "spectacular display" of the northern lights over Canada, keep your eyes on the skies over the next two nights!

Thanks to a massive solar flare that erupted from the sun earlier this week, a dazzling display of the aurora borealis could be lighting up the sky tonight (Thursday) and Friday night. Even better, it's expected to be visible across Quebec.

As the sun shines outside your window, or you enjoy a lovely walk in the balmy 27-degree heat, this may not be the Montreal weather forecast update you hoped for. But please don't blame messenger! If only because you could get caught in some extremely unpleasant weather if you leave the house to track us down and yell at us.

Severe thunderstorms and even a tornado may be on their way to Montreal on Wednesday afternoon, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), which currently has the city under a "severe thunderstorm watch."

Late Monday afternoon, Quebec was hit with its first tornado of the year, damaging homes in the Montérégie region, just 70 kilometres west of Montreal. Meanwhile, Montreal was under a severe thunderstorm watch, as strong winds gusted and rain poured, ultimately leaving tens of thousands of people without power.

Unfortunately, according to the Quebec forecast, this isn't the last we'll see of this sort of weather in the next few months — and it's all thanks to two climate patterns called El Niño and La Niña. If you're reading this El Niño and La Niña, that "thanks" was sarcastic.

Eastern Canada is bracing for some of the coldest air of the season, as a wave of Arctic chill is set to plunge temperatures from Ontario to Nova Scotia this week, including Southern Quebec. The frosty grip, extending all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico, follows a blizzard in far Northern Canada, where Nunavut saw temperatures plummet into the -40s.

The frigid air mass is part of a polar vortex, a phenomenon that intensifies in winter, wrapping around the Arctic and occasionally sending shivers down to lower latitudes. According to The Weather Network, instability is resulting in a pronounced dip — or 'trough' — out of the Arctic, signalling a brief but intense cold spell for millions of Canadians.

As Canadians prepare for festive season, weather patterns across the country indicate a mix of white and green on Christmas Day, with some regions gearing up for snowfall while others may miss the iconic winter blanket.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, with its more traditional, less empirical approach to weather prediction, has released its annual forecast, giving a picture of what some can expect this December.

While Eastern Canada is experiencing some warmer-than-usual days, the hot temps aren't going to last for much longer. In fact, Quebec and Ontario are expected to see a sudden drop in temperatures coming next week as a polar vortex makes its way across Canada.

"If this was January, temperatures below minus 20°C would be barrelling towards Ontario and Quebec," the Weather Network said in a recent report touching on an incoming bout of cold weather. Luckily for us, it's still only October, so the polar vortex isn't going to be sending frigid conditions our way just yet. Nevertheless, a "surprisingly strong temperature plunge" is set to take place this long weekend.
