Don't be surprised if you see a bunch of naked cyclists biking through the city soon. Montreal's annual World Naked Bike Ride is set to return for a 20th edition this month as a protest against the over-consumption of oil.

And, yes, participants can use BIXI bikes, as they have in previous years, so long as they cover their seats, a BIXI spokesperson told MTL Blog.

BIXI's city-wide bike-sharing service has become a fixture of Montreal summers, allowing residents and visitors to get around town on the cheap — without the hassle of lugging their own bicycles everywhere.

And now there's a way to rent Montreal BIXI bicycles for even less money this summer. How much money? Whatever number you're thinking of go lower... OK lower... even lower. Have you gotten to zero yet? Good because on certain days at certain times, BIXI bikes are about to be totally free.

Good news, cyclists! Montreal BIXI season is now officially in session with over 60% of the network opening Tuesday afternoon (around 549 stations) — the earliest start the city has ever seen.

In addition to announcing the launch of the 2024 season, the bike-sharing service also revealed the dates that the rest of the network will be in service, explained how to find out which stations are currently open, confirmed this season's prices and provided an update on the results of the year-round pilot project.

The wheels of change are spinning in Montreal, and this time, they're winter-proof. BIXI Montreal is pedalling into uncharted territory with a pilot project. For the first time, you can ride regular BIXI bikes all year long, even when Jack Frost is nipping at your nose.

An extended BIXI season begins on November 16 across a 150 km² area in Montreal. You'll have access to 1,500 regular bikes sporting winterized tires and non-slip pedals. Electric bikes, however, will not be available until they return in spring.

BIXI is becoming a year-round service in Montreal. The popular bike-sharing program will be available 365 days a year, starting with a pilot project in 2023. The usual end of the BIXI Montreal season is mid-November.

The pilot project will see 150 BIXI stations remain through the winter in a 100-square-kilometre area of the city "near the main routes of the bicycle network," especially the Réseau express vélo (REV) lanes, BIXI Montreal said in a press release.

The April 5 ice storm may have been winter's final outburst — at least we can hope. Environment Canada's Montreal weather forecast for the week of April 10 shows temperatures peaking at 20 C or above on three days in a row: Thursday, April 13, Friday, April 14, and Saturday, April 15 — just in time for the scheduled launch of the 2023 BIXI season.

Perhaps more exciting is that nighttime lows aren't forecast to dip below 6 C. On Thursday night, temperatures might remain in the double-digit positives.

Montrealers will pay a little more to use the city's popular bike-sharing service this year. BIXI Montreal prices are going up in 2023. The Montreal Executive Committee approved the hikes during its February 22 meeting. Despite the increases, seasonal BIXI pass subscribers will still benefit from a pre-season deal.

Those who sign up for a season-long subscription between March 15 and April 15, inclusive, will pay $89 before tax. That's $6 more than the 2022 pre-season price, but $10 less than the price of a season pass after April 15 this year, $99 before tax. Regular season passes were $92 in 2022.

Moving to Montreal and noticing Montrealers' many quirks might ironically be the most Montreal experience there is. And a recent, locally viral Reddit post proves it.

The August 31 post by Winnipegger-turned-Montrealer Danny Parys entitled "8 things I wish I knew before I moved to Montreal" has garnered over 900 upvotes and 300 comments as of the time of writing.
