A 72-year-old man was found dead after a fire in an apartment in Montreal's Sud-Ouest borough Monday night. The SPVM arson squad is now working to uncover the cause.

Firefighters first responded to a fire alarm in an apartment building on rue Saint-Antoine near the intersection with rue Vinet at around 11:50 p.m. SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils told the media firefighters discovered the man inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.

Montreal police are investigating after an apparent arson in a business early Wednesday morning.

A 2 a.m. 911 call alerted authorities to the blaze on rue Deslauriers near rue Benjamin-Hudon in an industrial area of the borough of Saint-Laurent near Highway 40 and the Town of Mount Royal.

Public health is asking residents in the vicinity of Montréal-Est to close their windows and doors if they smell or see smoke from a five-alarm fire in an industrial building near the intersection of rue Sherbrooke and avenue Durocher.

The fire was "under control" as of Monday morning, public health said. But officials continued to recommend closing off access to the outdoors and setting air conditioners to "recirculation" mode. Residents with heart disease, the health authority said, should avoid outdoor physical activity.

A fire in a Montreal apartment building in the early morning of May 30 left one person dead, according to police.

Firefighters were called to a complex on avenue Gatineau in Côte-des-Neiges "shortly before" 3 a.m., SPVM spokesperson Raphäel Bergeron said. They found a body in one apartment while searching the building.

A business in Saint-Léonard was the target of arson Wednesday morning, according to Montreal police.

Firefighters were dispatched to a building on rue Jean-Talon near rue de Fontenelle following a 4 a.m. 911 call. They were able to extinguish the flames but not before they caused what SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant described as "considerable" damage to the business.

It seems as if Montreal paramedics aren't the only ones who have had it! Firefighters from the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield fire station are up in arms after discovering a hidden camera in one of their offices, an event that the Syndicat des pompiers et pompières du Québec are considering to be espionage.

The SPQ released a statement on March 1 saying that they are "not happy with the discovery of surveillance equipment in an office at the Saint-Timothée fire station," which was discovered on February 26.

On Sunday morning, 105 firefighters responded to a four-alarm Montreal fire. Seven apartments and one business were affected, with only one mild injury incurred.

"At 9:45 a.m. we received a call for a fire at 309 Ontario Est," said Service de Sécurité Incendie de Montréal spokesperson William Murray. A total of 31 fire trucks were sent to the scene.

Old Montreal was literally ablaze with commotion on Saturday afternoon due to the rooftop fire on the Place du Royer complex. Cop cars and firetrucks responded in kind, rushing to the site of the fire, reacting so swiftly that the building was relativley unharmed and no injuries were sustained by any Montrealer.

Montreal's Fire Department has been under fire (pun!) for delayed response times recently, though this incident proves otherwise, as the city's firefighters are still swiftly putting out fires. Perhaps in this case, Montreal's firefighters were in too much of a rush, as one car owner was made painfully aware.
