parc la fontaine

If you've never danced to a Polish DJ set with a paczki in one hand and a smoked sausage in the other, June 7 might be your chance.

The annual Polski Piknik, one of Montreal's most beloved cultural festivals, is back for its sixth edition — and this time it's taking over Parc La Fontaine for the first time ever. From 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., the all-day event will serve up a mix of live music, traditional folk dancing, community vendors, and a whole lot of Polish comfort food.

Parc La Fontaine's outdoor theatre, the Théâtre de Verdure, will host 34 shows, performances and film screenings this summer. The theatre — on an island in the central pond in the Plateau-Mont-Royal's central park — reopened in 2022 after an extensive renovation project. The city bills it as "a must for summer evenings."

All of its shows are free to attend. With the exception of the opening and closing nights, June 28 and August 26, attendees don't even need tickets; the venue operates on a first-come-first-served basis.

Drinking in the sunshine and drinking, in the sunshine, are two of Montreal's favourite summer pastimes, and we're lucky enough to have legislation that allows these sacred pleasures, where other, lesser cities fail to do so. But parks are for more than just the idyllic consumption of alcohol — they're shared spaces that offer Montrealers the opportunity to spend time together outside of stuffy offices or loud restaurants.

Despite their myriad options for entertainment and relaxation, Montreal parks do have rules, most of which are directly articulated on the city's various websites. Some of these are a little overzealous, in my humble opinion, so consider this a measured response that splits the difference between legal responsibilities or personal courtesies and the right to fun. These seven points are your guide to being the coolest group at the park, or your money back, guaranteed.

Whether you're looking to dance it out to evacuate the stress, watch a show, drink or eat tons of food, the 514 has something for everyone.

The recent reopening of Parc La Fontaine's outdoor theatre has brought free shows and screenings this summer, including two evenings of completely free ballet coming at the end of August. The performances, hosted by Les Grands Ballets, will bring contemporary dance and traditional ballet styles together in a seven-part show.

The lush environment will add a breath of fresh air to the performances of 20 dancers, whose pieces include Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, choreographed by Mauro Bigonzetti, and an excerpt from Carmen, interpreted by Alberto Alonso.

Is it August already? If you're bewildered with how fast the summer is passing by, then don't fret, 'cause we're just as puzzled. But if the end of summer scaries are starting to kick in, not to worry, as Montreal is still coming in hot (as hot as the weather that is) to bring you a jam-packed weekend.

With so many must-try activities to get up to from amazing festivals including ÃŽleSoniq, great food and drinks all the way to unbelievable memories in the making, this weekend will be nothing short of amazing.

At least three festivals will present free film screenings in Montreal parks this summer. All told, Montrealers will have dozens of opportunities to catch some flicks with their neighbours and friends under the (barely-visible-through-the-urban-light-pollution) stars.

Here's a breakdown of public screenings in 2022.

Closed since 2014, Parc La Fontaine's Théâtre de Verdure is finally reopening on June 29, 2022.

The renovated venue, whose stage sits on a small island in the pond at the park's centre, is set to host over 30 free shows and screenings this summer. It will welcome Montrealers on a first-come-first-served basis.

It's the dead of winter in Montreal. Bars are closed. Where can one get their freaking disco on in Montreal right now? The answer: the skating rink in Parc La Fontaine where free disco skating nights are taking place on Friday nights throughout the month.

Funky light projections take place every evening on the ice at dusk as a collaboration between Le bassin des merveilles, Pépinière Espaces Collectifs, MAPP MTL and UQÀM interactive media students.

There's no better way to make a winter's day magical than by spending it at one of the outdoor Montreal skating rinks just gliding away.

While our city has a hefty list of rinks to explore, some may be a little rinky-dink — so here are a few of our favourites, and they're all free.
