Quebec is currently grappling with a severe thunderstorm that has swept across the province, churning up powerful wind gusts and unleashing heavy rainfall. The storm is so severe that Environment Canada's meteorologists warn it could even spawn tornadoes, marking a potentially dangerous escalation.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued only when imminent or occurring storms are likely to produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, or torrential rainfall. Today, the conditions meet those criteria, putting authorities and residents on high alert.

The Island of Montreal is currently under a rainfall warning, which was issued by Environment Canada in the early morning of April 23, 2023. A total rainfall amount of 40 millimetres is expected until Monday morning.

The federal weather department said that localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible due to the excess rainfall. The city of Montreal has identified eight zones across the island that are most at risk for flooding.

Mother Nature is in full force this week as Montreal is expected to be hit with over 40 millimetres of rain in the next few days. Environment Canada (EC) has now issued a rainfall warning for the Island of Montreal and its surrounding areas.

The warning was issued at 12:39 on April 23, 2023, and states "total rainfall amounts of 25 to 35 millimetres are expected over these areas until Monday morning."

Montreal received a large amount of rain over the last two days, causing flooding across many parts of the city, including Square-Victoria–OACI metro station. The storm may have come and gone over the 514, but seven regions across Quebec are still under a mix of weather warnings by Environment Canada, including rainfall, wind and storm surge alerts.

In the remote town of Fermont in the distant Côte-Nord region, the federal weather agency has issued both a rainfall and wind warning calling for 90 km/h gusts from Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. "Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds" that could toss around loose objects and debris.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for parts of southern Quebec, including Montreal, Laval, the Montérégie region, and parts of the Laurentides and Lanaudière regions.

The federal weather agency forecasts 10 to 25 millimetres of rain in much of the province. Some areas, it says, already got as much as 60 millimetres between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Environment Canada has put several areas of Quebec under a severe thunderstorm watch ahead of showers expected across much of the province beginning Sunday. It has also issued a rainfall warning for municipalities on the North Shore of the Saint Lawrence River near Montreal.

Those areas, including Saint-Jérome, Joliette and Mascouche, could get between 50 and 80 millimetres of rain between Monday and Tuesday, according to Envirocan.
