A Leaders Photo At The French Debate Has Become A Meme Because Everyone Is Just So Awkward

Federal leaders or power rangers?

Senior Editor

Canada's first French debate this election cycle maybe have dominated television news coverage, but it's a photo of the participating leaders that's maybe stirring the most social media conversation.

The photo by the Canadian Press, which has been shared widely on social media by journalists, shows Justin Trudeau, Yves-François Blanchet, Jagmeet Singh and Erin O'Toole standing in front of their podiums. It has quickly become meme fodder thanks to all the awkward faces and poses.

Bloc québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet's wide-legged stance is, naturally, the main focus.

Social media users have likened him to everything from a superhero, to a cowboy, to a very skilled dancer.

His mismatched and seemingly ancient brown shoes have also become the target of jokes.

But Blanchet isn't the only leader in the photo who has attracted the attention of commenters and meme-makers.

There seems to be a theme.

The federal leaders look like they're either about to save the world or, as this clever comparison shows, leave the planet.

Or maybe they're puppets.

When is a power pose too powerful?
