Two travellers who allegedly entered Canada using fake COVID-19 test results have been fined huge sums of money, Transport Canada confirmed to MTL Blog.

Flying from Mexico to Pierre-Elliot Trudeau Airport in Montreal, the two individuals are also alleged to have "knowingly boarded a flight after having tested positive for COVID-19 within the 14 day limitation," according to the federal agency.

$17,000 total fines for two people

Transport Canada told MTL Blog that the first passenger was fined a total of $10,000, including $5,000 for allegedly "presenting a false or misleading COVID-19 test."

The other $5,000 was for boarding "an aircraft while having made a false declaration of their health status, knowingly having tested positive for COVID-19 within a 14-day period and thus putting other travellers and crew at risk," Transport Canada says.

The second individual was fined a total of $7,000 for the same alleged offences.

The requirement for international air travellers to show airlines proof of a negative COVID-19 test came into effect on January 7.

As of February 22, international air travellers to Canada will need to undergo a mandatory hotel quarantine while they await the results of a COVID-19 test taken at their airport of arrival.

91% of Quebecers agreed with these new travel restrictions according to a Leger survey released on February 1.
