In a press conference on January 26, Premier François Legault hinted that some regions of Quebec may see their COVID-19 restrictions lifted after February 8.

Legault said that the number of daily COVID-19 cases in Quebec, decreasing steadily over the past week, means that the curfew and lockdown in Quebec are working.

We hope next week that we will be able to announce a lifting of certain measures after February 8.

Premier François Legault

"I want to thank all Quebecers who follow the rules and our police officers who apply them," Legault added.

The premier said that provincial officials hope they can announce a relaxation of measures for some regions next week.

However, Legault explained the COVID-19 situation is "more difficult" in the Greater Montreal area.

Without offering specifics, he said officials "will take into account the situation in each region."

The premier said that while COVID-19 hospitalizations in Quebec continue to decrease, they're still "too high."

Quebec reported three new COVID-19 hospitalizations in the province on January 26, for a total of 1,324.

Legault also warned Quebecers that the province should remain cautious due to new variants of COVID-19 that have emerged in Ontario, urging Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take action on international flights to Canada.

"It's time to act. We can either ban non-essential travel or isolate travelers in hotels."
