Everything You Need To Know About Montreal's "Secret" Dorval Island

Montreal isn't that big, so exploring it in its entirety isn't all that difficult. Which is why I was baffled when I found out there was one municipality I had never heard of before: The Island Of Dorval. It's truly fascinating, like a little secret village time seems to have forgotten. This community works hard to preserve the natural beauty of the island. It prides itself as being a summer camp, a park and a country club all rolled into one. Peace and tranquility are what Dorval Island is all about and unless you live there, you probably know very little about the tiny town, so here's everything you need to know about Dorval Island:

  • The town is only open from May 1st until October.

  • It is only accessible by a ferry that runs every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to midnight.

  • It is located roughly 20 minutes from downtown.

  • It has no paved roads, Only gravel paths and dirt roads.

  • There are barely any cars which means the  island is considered "car free."

  • There are no businesses of any kind.

  • You can walk around the entire island in about half an hour.

  • Rental activity is strictly controlled so getting a cottage there is very difficult.

  • There are only 58 cottages on the entire island.

  • The peak population is approximately 130 residents.
