With just weeks until the start of the school year, part of one Montreal high school is closing off because it's too "dangerous."

École Sophie-Barat director Jean-François Gagnon explained in a statement sent to parents that "the main pavilion has been under high surveillance due to the fragility of its masonry," but more "in-depth surveys" recently concluded that the east side is in need of "major work."

Part of the main pavilion is dangerous and can no longer be used by students and staff.

As a result, some classes will be temporarily relocated to the Saint Dorothy school in the borough of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.

"We are aware of the impact this will have on you and your children," Gagnon wrote.

"That said, the obligation to leave part of the main pavilion in an emergency to ensure everyone's safety is our priority."
