On Thursday, the NHL and the NHLPA and announced that four playoff games on Thursday and Friday would be cancelled and that play would resume Saturday.

"Black and Brown communities continue to face real, painful experiences," said the league in a statement.

"The NHL and NHLPA recognize that much work remains to be done before we can play an appropriate role in a discussion centered on diversity, inclusion and social justice."

The Montreal Canadiens have released a statement of their own, supporting the decision to postpone the games.

"Today, the platform these athletes hold is being used for a greater cause: to bring awareness to systemic racial injustice and to speak for those who don't have a voice."
