The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) released Quebec road accident stats for 2021, showing a 6.06% increase in fatal collisions compared to 2020, when lockdowns and travel restrictions forced many people off the roads.

According to Thursday's statement by the SQ, the Quebec police force responded to 245 deadly car accidents in 2021. In those 245 accidents, 262 people were declared dead, a 4.8% increase from 2020.

A 21-year-old Quebec driver was reportedly caught going 167 km/h in an 80 zone on Saturday night in L'Île d'Orléans.

According to media representative Audrey-Anne Bilodeau from La Sûreté du Québec, two police officers caught the driver speeding using a radar around 12:15 a.m.

Quebec police are about to get more strict with drivers as of this week. The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), in collaboration with the Contrôle routier Québec (CRQ), l'Association des Directeurs de Police du Québec (ADPQ), the SPVM, and La Sûreté du Québec will be conducting a provincial-wide initiative to crack down on driving while distracted. This is being dubbed "L’opération nationale concertée (ONC) Distraction 2020" and will be happening from September 18 until September 24.

According to the SAAQ, distracted while driving caused 8% of fatal crashes in 2019.
