In a move that has tails wagging and pet ears perking up across Quebec, a law banning elective surgery for pets is coming into effect this month.

As of February 10, practices like tail docking, ear cropping, canine devocalization, and the controversial method of feline declawing will no longer be allowed in the province. It will also be illegal for pet owners to travel outside of Quebec to seek those procedures.

In a tail-wagging twist on pet adoption, Montreal-based company Healthybud has unleashed an irresistible offer: a year's supply of free dog treats to anyone adopting a senior dog this month.

If you’ve been wanting a furry friend, now just might be the perfect time to welcome a new pet to the family. The Montreal SPCA is hosting a pay-what-you-can adoption event dubbed "Donate For Your Mate" day. Prospective adoptive animal parents can contribute as much or as little as they’re able.

With loads of animals up for adoption, including dogs, rabbits, birds and many other small animals, the Montreal SPCA is hoping to encourage the public to step up and provide a warm and loving home for its adorable animals, especially as the high season approaches — when the SPCA has an inflated number of animals up for adoption.

Unlike many countries worldwide, Quebec has no regulations governing the treatment of animals raised for food, according to Montreal's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The organization is engaged in a fight for legal changes, arguing that just because animals are being raised for human consumption doesn't mean they don't deserve humane living conditions.

The issue stems "from the system in which [producers] operate," acting director of the Montreal SPCA, Sophie Gaillard, explained in a recent statement.

Inflation is still very much on the rise, and Canadians are starting to resort to unfortunate measures in order to save money, including abandoning their pets. The Montreal SPCA took to its social media on April 15 to shed light on the recurring issue, saying that inflation is "destroying families."

"Every day, our staff sees families forced to abandon their animal companions. Financial concerns are the reason people give for abandonment," the Montreal SPCA wrote.

It would be illegal for a Quebec landlord to ban tenants from having pets if a — potential — bill actually passes the National Assembly. Opposition political party Québec solidaire (QS) has committed to introducing a bill to that effect by the end of the current legislative session.

In addition to reducing the number of abandoned animals, QS contends such a bill, if passed, would ease pressure on tenants amid a housing crunch. MNA Manon Massé says "allowing people to keep their pets in their homes is a simple way to take some of the pressure off of tenants as the housing crisis rages on."
