The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has recalled several cheese brands sold across Canada due to reasons that pose serious health and safety risks to Canadian consumers.

The CFIA published the class two recall on June 12, 2024, in collaboration with the recalling firm Les Fromages Latino Inc., regarding three cheese brands sold in provinces including Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

Here are the details for the recalled cheese products:

  • Rumba Queso Compesino Country Cheese | 200 g
  • Rumba Asadero Mexican Style Cheese | 200 g
  • Rumba Queso Frsco Fresco Cheese | 400 g
  • Rumba Campesino | 6 kg
  • Rumba Asadero | 6 kg
  • Sabana Queso Fresco Grilling Cheese | 200 g
  • Sombrero Asadero Grilling Cheese | 200 g

According to the CFIA, the affected cheese brands are being recalled due to Staphylococcus aureus, a dangerous bacteria that can cause a variety of self-limiting to life-threatening diseases in humans.

Per Health Canada, "the bacteria are a leading cause of food poisoning, resulting from the consumption of food contaminated with enterotoxins." Furthermore, Staphylococcus aureus is also one of the most common causes of skin, soft tissue, and nosocomial infection.

The CFIA is urging Canadians to not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected products. In fact, consumers should verify if they have any of the recalled items. If so, the federal health agency suggests tossing them out immediately or returning them to the point of purchase.
