Newsweek has released its annual ranking of the "World's Best Hospitals" and six Canadian institutions made the list.

Among them, the Jewish General Hospital is Montreal's only entry, placing in the 101-200 range.

Four hospitals in Toronto ranked in the top 60: Toronto General – University Health Network (4), Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (26), Mount Sinai Hospital (30) and North York General Hospital (59).

The only other Canadian entry was the Vancouver General Hospital, also in the 101-200 range.

Newsweek's top three in the world were the usual contenders: the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Massachusetts General Hospital.

The ranking includes 2,000 hospitals in 25 countries.

To compile the list, Newsweek used "recommendations from medical experts," "results from patient surveys" and other "KPIs" (key performance indicators), and assigned each hospital a score.
