Legault Got Mixed Reactions To A Post Comparing Quebec COVID-19 Numbers With Other Places

Premier François Legault has often made a point to compare Quebec's COVID-19 numbers with those in other countries. In response to a recent such post on Twitter, some people expressed confusion about the point of the comparisons.

While some have celebrated the information, many other people questioned the premier's intentions when, on January 15, he posted a screenshot of a spreadsheet showing that Quebec is supposedly doing better managing the second wave of the pandemic than some other countries.

Legault has often repeated this line of thought during his press conferences, comparing the COVID-19 situation in Quebec to that in countries like France and the United States. 

Yet, as several folks pointed out, the province is still among the hardest-hit jurisdictions in Europe and North America.

Several people in the replies to the January 15 post accused the premier of downplaying or trivializing the state of the pandemic in the province.

Premier Legault's office declined to comment on this story.

Data from Radio-Canada shows that Quebec has consistently led among all provinces in terms of the number of cases per 100,000 residents.

And while, by the same metric and according to the same data, Quebec ranks well below countries like the United States, France and the United Kingdom, it has ranked above others, like Germany and South Africa.
