Several Quebec schools made the top 1,000 in the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released on August 15. Among them, McGill tops the list at #78 globally (#3 in Canada). Montreal's other English-language university, Concordia, comes in in the #601-700 range. The best school in Canada, according to the ranking, is the University of Toronto, which earned a respectable #23.

The only other Canadian university above McGill is the University of British Columbia at #38.

78 McGill's Place On The 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities

The other Quebec universities on the list are the Université de Montréal (in the #151-200 range), the Université Laval (in the #301-400 range), the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), and the Université de Sherbrooke (both in the #601-700 range).

The top of the global list is unsurprising, featuring familiar names like Harvard (#1), Stanford (#2), the University of Cambridge (#3), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#4), and the University of California, Berkeley (#5).

In fact, this is Harvard's 18th straight year atop the annual ARWU ranking.

The ranking considers "several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution."
