Heads up, Canadian travellers! If you've been thinking about getting a NEXUS card to speed up your border crossings, now's the time to act, because a major price hike is coming next week.

NEXUS passes are about to get a lot more expensive, with fees set to jump by more than double — a whopping 140% — starting Tuesday, October 1. That means if you want to avoid the price hike, you'll need to submit your application ASAP.

NEXUS is a trusted traveller program that lets you breeze through the border between Canada and the U.S., giving you access to dedicated lineups, faster security screenings at airports and quicker border clearance. Whether you drive, fly or even take a boat, a NEXUS card can save you a ton of time at the border if you qualify.

The price of a NEXUS pass valid for five years of travel is currently US$50 (around CA$68), but starting next week, that's set to increase to US$120 (CA$162).

This fee increase, first announced back in April, is the first in over 20 years, and according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the higher price is meant to cover the growing expenses of running the program and make room for future improvements.

For those renewing their NEXUS pass or applying for the first time, this is your last chance to lock in the old rate. You can confirm your eligibility and find the application on the CBSA website. As long as you submit your application before the October 1 deadline, you'll secure the lower price — even if your interview happens after the fee increase.

So, if you're looking to save, now's your last chance to apply!
