A technical issue led the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to announce delays for Canadians expecting to receive the Goods and Services Tax Credit and/or Ontario's Trillium Benefit (OTB), both of which should already have been paid to eligible taxpayers.

The CRA has responded to the delays by writing that it's in "solution mode," per an April 9 tweet. That's somewhat encouraging!

The feds' plan to double the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit for half a year has been approved. The goal of the limited-time bonus is to diminish the impact of inflation and make life more affordable for many Canadians. Officials estimate that about 11 million eligible taxpayers will be able to get more money back from the government as a result.

The measure, part of Bill C-30, the Cost of Living Relief Act (Targeted Tax Relief), received Royal Assent on October 18.

As part of an effort to alleviate the impact of inflation, the Government of Canada has tabled legislation to double the Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit for eligible households.

The GST (TPS in French) credit is meant to "offset the financial impact" of the tax on "low and modest-income people and families," the Department of Finance explains online. In effect, those households get back some of the money they lose through the sales tax.
