A new report backs up Montrealers' frustrations with the seemingly ubiquitous orange cone. The 84-page report commissioned by the Chambre de Commerce aims to push the city to reform its traffic and construction zone management. It examines the policies and circumstances that produce the city's dizzying, at times non-sensical tangle of roadwork and gridlock. It puts data behind residents' theories. And the result is pretty damning.

In one instance in September 2022, the firm that produced the study found a whopping 604 construction signs and cones within an area of just 2.2 square kilometres downtown. Of those 604 posts, 27% "had no reason to be," the firm determined.

The long weekend is finally here! And as you are planning to travel in and around the Montreal area to be with your loved ones on Thanksgiving, you should be mentally prepared for the many road closures for construction ahead of you.

Mobility Montréal is urging drivers to avoid a bunch of areas as much as possible, namely Route 136 (aka the Ville-Marie) between the Turcot interchange and the end of the Viger tunnel in both directions, the Honoré-Mercier bridge in both directions, the Saint-Pierre interchange, and Autoroute 15 southbound in the La Prairie sector.

Montreal drivers who usually take Highway 25 toward the city are in for a detour this weekend. The northbound side of the roadway and the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel will be completely shut.

Repair work on the tunnel will begin on Friday, September 9, at 11:30 p.m., closing Highway 25 in the direction of Montreal and Highway 20 between exit 90 and the entrance from rue Notre-Dame Est. Major traffic is expected on the southbound side of the tunnel.

Accessing Montreal's downtown core will be a little bit harder for drivers this Labour Day weekend due to extensive construction work. Montreal's Route 136 will be seriously affected. The eastbound section of the highway will be completely closed as of 10 p.m. Friday up until 5 a.m Tuesday.

Mobilité Montréal is informing road users that they should avoid these sectors as much as possible due to the major obstructions involving the Turcot, Ville-Marie Tunnel and the Saint-Pierre Interchange.
