After receiving our very first snowfall, you might be tempted to book a vacay outta Canada ASAP for a quick winter escape. However, you can't just up and go wherever you'd like as the Government of Canada has issued travel warnings for a handful of countries worldwide.

The federal government is still urging Canadians to avoid all travel to Russia and Ukraine due to the ongoing war. However, Canadians are also being told to avoid countries such as France, China, Haiti and Peru, to name a few.

Planning a trip to the United States soon? It's best to brush up on some updated rules. The vaccination measures set in place at the Canada-U.S. border have since been extended by the American government for Canadian travellers.

On April 21, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the United States would be officially extending the temporary vaccine requirement for non-American travellers heading to the U.S. by land or port entry.

The next time you're flying with an American airline in the States, you'll get to decide whether to wear a mask or not. Although the Quebec mask mandate persists, a federal judge south of the border paused a nationwide rule on Monday, removing the mandate for compulsory face coverings on public transport, including planes, trains, taxis, and rideshare vehicles.

While the mask rule was set to expire in two weeks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had continuously extended it during the pandemic and were expected to do so again. But Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, who was appointed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, ruled that the national public health agency was overstepping its authority.

Pack your bags and dig out your passport! Following what seems to have been the worst of the Omicron variant, and just as Quebec relaxes more public health measures, the federal government eased travel restrictions as of 12:01 a.m. on February 28. Here's what to expect from Canada's border rules.

"Recent data indicates that the latest wave of COVID-19 driven by the Omicron variant has passed its peak in Canada," the Canadian government said in a news release. "As provinces and territories adjust their public health measures, and as we transition away from the crisis phase, it is now time to move towards a more sustainable approach to long-term management of COVID-19."

With the recent changes in global travel measures, you can finally book a vacay with a bit more ease. Now, that doesn't mean travel becomes any less tedious. Well... until now, that is. The Montreal airport recently installed its very own video game room to keep you occupied while you wait to board your flight.

In an Instagram post shared on February 21, the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport announced the official opening of their Cyber Station — an entertainment lounge full of video games, and the very first in Canada.

Almost a month after Canada scrapped PCR tests for short trips out of the country, the federal government is stepping back on the decision in response to the spread of the Omicron variant.

In a press conference on Friday, federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced that, as of Tuesday, the government is "reintroducing the requirement for a pre-arrival PCR test result for all travellers leaving the country for less than 72 hours."

On November 30, Canada implemented new travel restrictions requiring all international air travellers from a country besides the U.S. to take a COVID-19 test when landing at the airport in Canada and isolate themselves until they get their results — regardless of vaccination status.

But, according to a December 10 press conference, there are some updates you should know about.

Travel restrictions in Canada were updated yet again on November 30 due to the Omicron variant. On Friday, December 3, the government reminded all travellers to use the ArriveCAN app to enter the country, regardless of the length of the trip or the country of origin.

"I would also like to remind all travellers — Canadians and foreign nationals who travel by land, air or water for long or short trips — to submit their health and travel information in the free ArriveCAN application or website before arriving in Canada," Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said. "This is mandatory."

If you forget to provide the necessary documents in the app or on the ArriveCAN website within 72 hours before your return to Canada, you will not be able to benefit from the exemptions to the travel rules and you could be quarantined for 14 days, even if you are fully vaccinated and you have travelled less than 72 hours in the United States.

Starting November 30, unvaccinated travellers 12 and older won't be allowed to board a plane or get on a VIA Rail or Rocky Mountaineer train in Canada. It's no longer possible to offer a negative PCR test as a substitute for being vaccinated.

The change was first announced in early October by Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. It established October 30 as the date by which the government would require all travellers departing from airports in Canada or taking a federally regulated train to be fully vaccinated.

Omicron is the latest COVID-19 virus variant causing concern — and it could also impact your travel plans. On November 26, the federal government announced new travel restrictions for people who have visited certain countries that will be in effect until January 31, 2022.

Non-Canadian travellers who have been to southern Africa — specifically, South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, or Namibia — in the last 14 days are no longer allowed to enter the country.

If the headache of getting a PCR test for COVID-19 is the only thing keeping you from taking a short trip abroad, it may be time to re-think your plans. On November 19, Canada announced that it would be scrapping the PCR test requirement for some travellers re-entering Canada after 72 hours or less.

The change is set to come into effect on November 30, the feds announced, and it applies to trips by both land and air. But there are conditions.
