Canada is home to several top universities across the globe with three, in particular, ranking among the best worldwide.

Times Higher Education dropped its annual ranking of the World University Rankings 2024 and three Canadian institutions (and only three) managed to make the top 100.

The university ranking includes a total of 1,906 universities across 108 countries and regions across the world. Times Higher Education used 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure a school's performance across five areas to compile the ranking including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.

This year’s ranking analyzed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally, Times Higher Education said.

So, who came out on top?

The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom was ranked as the best university in the world. Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge rounded out the top five.

The University of Toronto was the first Canadian school to make the list, ranking 21st overall. UofT ranked highest in categories such as industry (96.1), research environment (94.1) and research quality (92.8).

Vancouver's University of British Columbia was the second Canadian institution to appear on the ranking, placing 41st overall. The west coast university ranked highest in international outlook (95) and research quality (90.5).

The third and final Canadian university to make the top 100 best schools in Canada was none other than McGill University. The Montreal university scored highest in international outlook (92.5), research quality (88.8), and industry (76.1).

McMaster University (103), the University of Alberta (109), and the Université de Montréal (111) also appeared on the 2024 ranking.

As for Montreal's Concordia University, the institution ranked in the 501-600 range.
