A brand-new Montreal food festival is shining a spotlight on the "hidden flavours" of Saint-Léonard.

While the city has no shortage of culinary events happening this summer — from Les Premiers Vendredis to Taco Fest to anything organized by Asiasie — this new month-long festival, called Fringale, has a couple of unique and enticing perks. For starters: every dish costs $8 or less. Is your wallet crying tears of joy, yet?

What's more, Fringale is designed to take your taste buds on a "world-tour" of different international cuisines that reflect the neighbourhood's communities. Spread over the course of five weekends, each with a different region as its theme, foodies will embark on a mouthwatering journey across the globe — without ever leaving rue Jean-Talon Est.

Try not to drool as you check out the dates and themes below:

  • August 2 to 4: Flavours of Italy
  • August 9 to 11: Fragrances of Asia
  • August 16 to 18: Maghreb and Middle Eastern delicacies
  • August 23 to 25: Caribbean and Latin American delights
  • August 30 to September 2: Culinary world tour

Each weekend, you can choose between at least four participating rue Jean-Talon Est restaurants, each of which will be offering two specialties in a tasting format for $8 or less before taxes. The last weekend is expected to feature around 19 eateries because almost all the previous weeks' restaurants are returning for the multicultural grand finale.

Since the dishes are snack-sized and affordable, you can treat yourself to a little bite or several little bites, creating a custom picnic to enjoy on the Terrasse de Léon.

Make sure to pick up a stamp card at any of the participating restaurants and get your card stamped with each tasting so you can be entered to win weekly draw prizes, including a Nintendo Switch OLED, $100 gift cards to Montreal museums and a family passport for Espace pour la vie.

You can find more information as well as a map with all of the participating restaurants on the SDC Jean-Talon Est website.
