Want to squeeze the last bit of fun out of summer? With Labour Day coming up, and Pumpkin Spice Lattes en route to Starbucks, you don't have much time to tackle your bucket list before the leaves start to fall.

So, fill your schedule with festivals, take in the beautiful scenery, go for a swim, dance the night away at a park, and taste all the yummy snacks at an outdoor market... these are the activities we long for all winter — the best moments of the year. And, since, as they say, the best things in life are free, none of it will cost you a single dime.

Montreal summers are notorious for being overloaded with festivals. But, lately, it seems like food festivals in particular have been taking the cake (pun intended), with a new one cropping up each weekend — and we're definitely not mad at it.

The latest Montreal food event, which is set to kick off this Thursday, features international street eats from countries including Spain, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, the Caribbean, Venezuela and more.

A brand-new Montreal food festival is shining a spotlight on the "hidden flavours" of Saint-Léonard.

While the city has no shortage of culinary events happening this summer — from Les Premiers Vendredis to Taco Fest to anything organized by Asiasie — this new month-long festival, called Fringale, has a couple of unique and enticing perks. For starters: every dish costs $8 or less. Is your wallet crying tears of joy, yet?

When someone says they want to defund the police, the first question skeptics usually ask is, "How will we keep each other safe?" A festival based in Montreal aims to promote answers to that question, with an educational celebration of community-based alternatives to policing.

Oh, and there will be free food, comedy shows, DJ sets and interactive workshops as well, so don't worry about getting bored by the nitty-gritty of it all. Defund la Police Festival is dedicated to defunding the police, but not just that: it's also about investing in communities and promoting solidarity between Montrealers.

Because it can never be too early to start a party, Igloofest is bringing back its free festive gatherings every Saturday afternoon, from January 21 to February 11, 2023. You can attend Igloofête gratis from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., just before party animals take over Quai Jacques Cartier at the Old Port for Montreal's coldest music festival.

The four events will welcome Montrealers of all ages, as long as they're brave enough to face the icy temps. Three local electronic DJs will entertain the crowd each Saturday, in an immersive multimedia setup featuring kids' drawings mixed live by a VJ. The lineup for Igloofête has yet to be announced.

Winter is coming, but in the 514, party animals don't hibernate! After many setbacks related to pandemic restrictions, Montreal's Igloofest will finally return to the Old Port from January 19 to February 11, 2023. Passes for the 15th edition of Quebec's coldest music festival are now on sale, so Montrealers should get the freezing festivities they deserve this time around.

So, who's on the lineup? The full program has not been announced yet, but we already know that two separate music shows will take place on February 4 and 11. Those dates were announced last winter but the concerts had to be postponed to the 2023 edition.
