There are now 2 Montreal weather alerts in effect at the same time, as thunderstorms loom

But better days are expected soon! 🌦️

Already under a heat warning, Environment Canada has issued a second simultaneous weather alert for the Montreal area — this time, a severe thunderstorm watch.

The good news is that things should start cooling down over the next few days, though the Montreal weather forecast for the coming long weekend isn't looking particularly pretty either.

"This afternoon, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong gusts, large hail and heavy rain," says Environment Canada in a statement published Thursday morning.

"Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water."

The federal department suggests the following when it comes to navigating thunderstorms: "Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!"

Meanwhile, in its heat warning, Environment Canada notes that humidex values are expected to be over 40 degrees on Thursday with temperatures reaching highs between 30 and 35 degrees followed by overnight lows above 20 degrees.

On the bright side, the heat and humidity are expected to ease on Friday, bringing this recent heat wave to a close. Forecasters predict a high of 27 degrees Friday morning (30 C with the humidex) and a low of 18 degrees at night.

Over the weekend, highs are expected to be between 21 and 25 degrees with lows between 18 and 16 degrees. While this sounds pretty nice, it's also supposed to rain on both days.

That said, the long weekend should cap off with a beautiful day in time for Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Fête nationale). Environment Canada is predicting sunshine, with some clouds mixed in, a high of 26 degrees and a low of 16 degrees.

For now, until the heat wave passes, we recommend cooling off at one of the city's public outdoor swimming pools or heading to your nearest ice cream shop for a scoop (or three).
