It's been 17 months...

17 months after Montreal declared its first state of emergency because of COVID-19, the city is finally ending it.

As of Friday, August 27, the city will be out of a state of emergency and move into "alert mode."

The first state of emergency was declared on March 27, 2020.

This has been the longest state of emergency in Montreal's history.

The City of Montreal cited "the high vaccination rate, the imminent entry into force of the vaccination passport and the stability of government orders" in its decision to "carry out its emergency actions without depending on exceptional powers."

The vaccine passport system is scheduled to launch on September 1.

Provincial health rules will of course remain in place.
